    What Is OCD?

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) done to reduce the distress those thoughts cause. It is time consuming and can affect every area of life.

    Types of OCD

    • Contamination: Fear of germs or illness with excessive washing or cleaning.
    • Checking: Repeatedly checking locks, appliances or mistakes.
    • Harm and Intrusive Thoughts: Distressing thoughts about causing harm, often paired with avoidance.
    • Scrupulosity: Religious or moral fears about sin, guilt or doing wrong.
    • Symmetry and Ordering: A need for things to feel just right.
    • Relationship OCD: Constant doubt about a partner or relationship.

OCD Is Not a Quirk. It Is a Treatable Condition.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) and the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals performed to neutralize them (compulsions). OCD is not about being tidy. It is a cycle that can consume hours a day, and it responds to a specific, well-researched treatment.

Ready to Take the First Step?

Our team can help you find the right provider and the right kind of care. Appointments are available in as little as 48 hours.

    Our Evidence-Based Treatment Approach

Generic talk therapy alone usually does not resolve OCD and can even feed it. Effective treatment targets the obsession-compulsion cycle directly.

    Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)

The gold-standard treatment for OCD: gradually facing feared triggers while refraining from compulsions, so the brain relearns that the anxiety fades on its own.

    Cognitive Therapy for OCD

Addressing the inflated sense of responsibility and intolerance of uncertainty that keep the cycle running.

    Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Building willingness to have uncomfortable thoughts without obeying them, while moving toward the life you want.

    Medication Management Collaboration

Coordination with our psychiatric team; medication meaningfully reduces OCD intensity for many people and pairs well with ERP.

    Diagnosing OCD

Reading about symptoms can help you put words to what you are experiencing, but only a trained mental health professional can diagnose ocd. At Atium Health, your first appointment includes a thorough assessment of your history, symptoms and goals, often supported by validated questionnaires. We repeat those measures over time so you and your clinician can see real progress.

Your provider will also look for anything that may be contributing, such as sleep, medical conditions, medications, substance use or other mental health concerns, so your plan fits the whole picture.

    What Causes OCD?

There is rarely a single cause. Most often ocd develops from a mix of life experiences and biology.

    Lifestyle and Environmental Factors

    • Stressful life events
    • Major transitions such as a new baby or job
    • Accommodation from family that reinforces compulsions
    • Trauma

Someone may have several or none of these factors and still be affected.

    Biological Factors

OCD has a strong genetic component and involves differences in brain circuits that manage habits and error detection. In some children it can follow a strep infection.

    Telehealth Treatment for OCD

Many people can be assessed and treated for ocd through secure video sessions. Research shows telehealth therapy and medication management can be as effective as in person care for many conditions, and it makes it easier to fit treatment into a busy schedule. Atium Health offers telehealth throughout Utah, Arizona, Idaho and Florida.
