What Is Postpartum Depression and Anxiety?
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are mental health conditions that can occur during pregnancy or in the first year after birth. They are more intense and longer lasting than the brief baby blues, and they are common and treatable.
Types of Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
- Postpartum Depression: Persistent sadness, hopelessness or loss of interest after birth.
- Postpartum Anxiety: Constant worry, racing thoughts and trouble resting.
- Perinatal OCD: Unwanted, distressing thoughts, often about harm coming to the baby, with checking or avoidance.
- Postpartum PTSD: Trauma symptoms following a difficult or frightening birth.
- Postpartum Psychosis: A rare emergency involving confusion, hallucinations or delusions that needs immediate care.
Postpartum Struggles Are Common and Treatable
Up to one in five new mothers experiences a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. These are medical conditions driven by hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the enormity of the transition, not a reflection of your love for your baby or your ability as a parent.

Diagnosing Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
Reading about symptoms can help you put words to what you are experiencing, but only a trained mental health professional can diagnose postpartum depression and anxiety. At Atium Health, your first appointment includes a thorough assessment of your history, symptoms and goals, often supported by validated questionnaires. We repeat those measures over time so you and your clinician can see real progress.
Your provider will also look for anything that may be contributing, such as sleep, medical conditions, medications, substance use or other mental health concerns, so your plan fits the whole picture.
What Causes Postpartum Depression and Anxiety?
There is rarely a single cause. Most often postpartum depression and anxiety develops from a mix of life experiences and biology.
Lifestyle and Environmental Factors
- Severe sleep deprivation
- A difficult pregnancy or birth
- Limited support at home
- Financial or relationship stress
- Feeding challenges or a baby with health needs
Someone may have several or none of these factors and still be affected.
Biological Factors
Rapid hormone changes after birth, a personal or family history of depression or anxiety, and thyroid changes can all increase risk.
Telehealth Treatment for Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
Many people can be assessed and treated for postpartum depression and anxiety through secure video sessions. Research shows telehealth therapy and medication management can be as effective as in person care for many conditions, and it makes it easier to fit treatment into a busy schedule. Atium Health offers telehealth throughout Utah, Arizona, Idaho and Florida.
